Modern Marvels

Tomcat Sunset

Hosted by Terry Deitz, a former Tomcat pilot, this special explores the legacy of one of the greatest fighter jets ever built. Witness firsthand the last F-14 catapult launches and arrested trap landings aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt. Hear what the aviators and sailors who have flown and maintained this iconic aircraft over the years have to say about its long-lived active duty career. Deitz will ride shotgun one last time before the F-14 is retired. Then, we'll reflect with veteran pilots, Navy brass, and airplane enthusiasts as the world bids farewell at the F-14 Memorial and Final Flight Ceremony at the Naval Air Station in Oceana, VA.

Hands on History

Fighter Pilots

The role of the fighter pilot has evolved from the biplane battles of WWI to the high-tech combat of today's Top Guns. Host Ron Hazelton traces that evolution against a backdrop of silk scarves and smart missiles, Mustangs and Messerschmitts.

Modern Marvels

Jet Engines

Strap on a parachute and soar through the saga of jet propulsion which radically transformed our world since the inception of World War II - from the Nazi's first jet-powered aircraft to the U.S. F-22 jet fighter, from the Concorde to tomorrow's scram-jet, a hypersonic transport plane that switches to rocket power outside the earth's atmosphere.

Radar: The Invention That Saved Democracy

Examines the history of radar, focusing on its role in the Allies' victory in WWII--from the Chain Home Network, rudimentary radar towers that ringed England's eastern coast, to the role of Boston's MIT in developing a smuggled English secret, the cavity of magnetron.

Apollo 11

As mankind's greatest achievement of the 20th century, Apollo 11 stood as the apogee of science, exploration, flight, and technological prowess. In scarcely 10 years, America went from rocketing monkeys to landing a man on the moon. Leaving Earth on July 16, 1969, Neil Armstrong, Edwin Aldrin, and Mike Collins pushed the limits of skill and endurance. See and experience the flight of Apollo 11 through the eyes of the astronauts, mission controllers, engineers, and designers who made it happen.

Modern Marvels

It Came From Outer Space

Discover how essential space travel technologies have journeyed back to Earth with surprising and indispensable commercial applications. For example, paint that can withstand the heat of reentry now protects our steel-framed high-rises from collapsing in a fire. Batteries that can take a sports car from zero to 60 in four seconds also keep our satellites in orbit. The oxygen tank used by firefighters to save countless lives is just like the one used by our astronauts during the Apollo missions. These and many ordinary objects are traced back to their NASA roots, where they originally had the right stuff.

Observatories: Stonehenge to Space Telescopes

Space Telescopes. From Stonehenge to the Hubbell Telescope, mankind has always been a race of stargazers. Unforgettable film footage and expert accounts reveal the facts of astronomy's most mind-boggling discoveries.

Star City

Star City, the Gagarin Center for Training Cosmonauts, was established by the former Soviet Union in the 1910s as a school for the future conquerors of space. Today, it's where Russian cosmonauts and international guests train on Soyuz rocket simulators and the MIR complex simulator. We join cosmonauts as they undergo grueling ground training in survival courses and parachuting, and face some of Star City's toughest challenges--G-Force simulators, space orientation, and rescue training.
