Battle of Iwo Jima

It was to turn into the bloodiest and most heroic chapter in U.S. Marine Corps history. During WWII, the tiny island of Iwo Jima acted as an advance Japanese airbase, able to identify and attack U.S. bombers on their way to Tokyo. As the Americans advance across the Pacific in 1945, it's seen as a critical stepping-stone to the attack on mainland Japan. Under the command of Lt. General Tadamichi Kuribayashi, a samurai and 30-year veteran, Iwo Jima was garrisoned by 21,000 Japanese soldiers and fortified with a network of underground bunkers, making it impervious to bomber attack. General Holland M. "Howlin' Mad" Smith's battle-hardened Marines clear hidden pockets of resistance. By the time the island is finally cleared and the U.S. flag flies unchallenged over Mt. Suribachi, only 212 Japanese survive.
